As a Virginia-based author of both fiction and nonfiction, I've worked as an educator on both the secondary and post-secondary levels. But since high school, when I worked on the school newspaper, I've always had a passion for both reading and writing. I live in the Roanoke, VA, area, with my husband, Josh (also a writer) and our adorable Eskie (American Eskimo), Flurry. She's definitely part of the family, with boundless energy and appetite! (She has learned to turn down the bed for us at bedtime. She's so smart!) I'm passionate about scenic walks and jogs in parks or along mountain trails, enjoying local cuisine, cultural events, and the many festivals in the area, staying healthy, reading, streaming movies and provocative TV series (especially those based on novels!) and current events. My pronouns are he/him/his.

Flurry, the American Eskimo Dog: Writer's Assistant

sk9oifpmon4th11pj3u17u8qzjwq 981.73 KB
I’ve always been an unapologetic dog-lover. Just ask almost anyone who clocks their daily steps at the lake near our home where my husband and I take Flurry for her walks. Flurry, Josh and I have several canine friends whose people always stop to chat when we encounter each other. Flurry and her doggie comrades touch noses (and other body parts), then play, while Josh and I catch up on the latest gossip and community happenings.

But Flurry isn’t just a way...

Staying “Positive” in a Time of Turbulence WARNING: This blog may come

WARNING: This blog may come across as a “stream-of-consciousness” self-indulgent piece at times, but it represents some of the issues I’ve been grappling with over the past few months.

As a white individual who enjoys certain socio-cultural privileges, I am also a member of a marginalized group. Specifically, I am a gay man. I recognized my “difference” as far back as elementary school, though I couldn’t put a name to it then. I’d internalized a lot of bullshit until I was around 30, when I...

What's Next on Snack Shack's Menu? Dann here, checking in from my writing

Dann here, checking in from my writing lair where I've sequestered myself for the past few weeks so I can get Dusty's Beachin’ Good Snack Shack drafted. (Of course, I will always take a break when Flurry, my American Eskimo dog, needs a little loving. Oh, and hubby, too.)

The first draft to the novel, which belongs to a brand new series called Short Orders, is almost finished. Next, I segue to my favorite part of the writing process—revisions! That’s when the novel attains its heart and soul...
